Winter Ice Dynamics in a Semi-Closed Ice-Covered Sea: Numerical Simulations and Satellite Data

چکیده
The White Sea is a small shallow sea covered by ice in winter. There are very few numerical models of this sea. For the ice-free sea, much data has been collected, but for winter only amount (satellite only). We use our finite-element model Jasmine and satellite to trace advection exchange between parts Sea. aim investigation adjust adequately reproduce dynamics. By comparing on sea-ice concentration with prediction, we show that describes dynamics well, it estimate flow from bays middle part through narrow strait. Ice neighbouring shown be intensive, large dispersion compared time-mean, producers, while Gorlo straight accept ice. demonstrate tool can used better understand regime

The Arctic Winter Sea Ice Quadrupole Revisited
The dominant mode of Arctic sea ice variability in winter is often maintained to be represented by a quadrupole structure, comprising poles of one sign in the Okhotsk, Greenland, and Barents Seas and of opposing sign in the Labrador and Bering Seas, forced by the North Atlantic Oscillation. This study revisits this large-scale wintermode of sea ice variability usingmicrowave satellite and reana...
متن کاملOn an efficient numerical method for modeling sea ice dynamics
A computationally efficient numerical method for the solution of nonlinear sea ice dynamics models employing viscous-plastic rheologies is presented. The method is based on a semi-implicit decoupling of the x and y ice momentum equations into a form having better convergence properties than the coupled equations. While this decoupled form also speeds up solutions employing point relaxation meth...

متن کاملSea ice extent from satellite microwave sensors
provide a convenient way to monitor the vast expanses of sea ice in the Polar Regions and this is done primarily using microwave techniques, which contrary to optical instruments, can operate at night and in all-weather conditions. The determination of sea ice extents from satellite platforms can be exploited as a marker for climate change, a navigation tool and a reference for coupled ocean-ic...
متن کاملInter-annual sea-ice dynamics and micro-algal biomass in winter pack ice of Marguerite Bay, Antarctica
microbial biomass or production processes within the pack ice of the Antarctic extremely rare. The evaluation of their inter-annual variability in the context of ice dynamics and trends in regional climate has not been possible. During the late winters of 2001 (July–August) and 2002 (August–September) we assessed sea-ice dynamics, sea-ice characteristics, and biomass of sea-ice microbiota along...
